Satoyama is a Japanese concept with strong European resonance.
It is the Landscapes where nature and people have co-evolved, and assets and their management reflect deep nature-culture interlinkages and knowledge.
While commonly referred to as satoyama, from a more scientific point of view, such areas where the interaction between people and the landscape maintains or enhances biodiversity while providing humans with the goods and services needed for their well-being are called Socio-ecological Production Landscapes and Seascapes (SEPLS).
