Wildlife in the Terraced Rice Fields

Rice paddies that use little or no pesticides are home to a rich variety of wildlife.

During the rice planting and weeding activities carried out from May to June, many different creatures were discovered.

What she found was…

It was a Kooi-mushi!
Kooi-mushi (Appasus major) is listed as a Near Threatened species in Japan’s national Red Data Book.

Could it be a species of newt?

A Sawagani — a Japanese freshwater crab — was also spotted.
